Pros and Cons Starting a New Business in Your 50s

There can be many pros and cons when starting a new business in your 50s. However starting a new business can be an exciting and fulfilling journey at any age. That said, or those of us in our 40s and 50s, it might seem like a more daunting task. I hope to explode that myth and will explore the challenges and opportunities of starting a new business in midlife, additionally discussing strategies to help you navigate this journey successfully.

whether we like it or not, technology plays a crucial role in today's business landscape. As a seasoned professional, adapting to the latest advancements might seem overwhelming. However, investing time in learning new tools, attending workshops, or hiring tech-savvy employees can help you bridge this gap and stay competitive.

Leveraging Networks and Mentorship

Networking and mentorship are essential for entrepreneurs of any age. Leveraging your existing professional networks, both online and offline, to build connections and find potential partners or clients is a great technique to move faster in building a new venture.  Additionally, seeking out mentors who have successfully started businesses can provide guidance, support, and inspiration throughout your journey, whatever your age.

Addressing age bias

While age discrimination is illegal, it unfortunately still exists in some corners of the business world. Instead, you may consider working for yourself to eliminate the prejudice and concentrate on your own success. Remember, with great age comes great wisdom.

Building a strong network of professional contacts is an essential aspect of starting a successful business. However, individuals in their 50s who are venturing into a new industry may have a limited network of relevant connections.  While starting a new business in your 50s may come with certain disadvantages, it doesn't mean that success is unattainable. By acknowledging these obstacles and developing strategies to overcome them, aspiring entrepreneurs can increase their chances of building a thriving business.

The Disadvantages of Age

However exciting it may seem, embarking on this journey in your 50s comes with its own unique set of challenges and disadvantages and being divorced just adds to the list.

You may have come across some of the common hurdles that individuals in their 50s may face when starting a new business. Maybe some of you have learned how they can navigate through them.

Financial Constraints

One major disadvantage of starting a new business in later years is the potential for financial constraints. Divorce has a great knack of Ieaving you with your hands tied tightly behind your back.

If like me, you have lost much of the wealth you accumulated during your married life you will be feeling this more acutely than others.

You may also have financial responsibilities such as maintenance and child support on top of ongoing household bills.

Starting a traditional business often requires a significant investment of both time and money, and these financial obligations can limit the resources available to allocate towards your new life, post-divorce.

Another disadvantage of entrepreneurship in your 50s is the limited amount of time available for business recovery in case of failure. Unlike when you were in your 20s or 30s 50s you have less time to bounce back from a potential business failure.

Since retirement might be on the horizon, the risk of losing valuable savings or investments can be particularly detrimental.

The Advantage of Experience

One of the biggest advantages of starting a new business in your 50s is the wealth of experience you bring to the table. After spending decades in the workplace, you have gained valuable skills, knowledge, and connections that can greatly benefit your new venture. Additionally, your industry experience can give you a unique perspective and insight, setting you apart from younger entrepreneurs.

Technological Gap

In today's rapidly evolving digital age, staying up to date with the latest technology is crucial for business success. Many of the dads I have encountered in their 50s believe they face a technological gap compared to younger generations who grew up with more exposure to technology. Whilst this may seem true on the surface this gap is much smaller than most imagine.

Furthermore, this huge leap in technology over the past decade has enabled starting again in business and building a new empire easier than ever.

We all have access to the latest technology and learning right here in our own homes via our laptops. It’s just a matter of taking the time to embrace learning and adapt to change.

I found myself in exactly this position.

Financially speaking, knowing that I had to start again in my early 50s made me change everything I was doing both business-wise and in my private life.

I soon realised that by harnessing the amazing possibilities offered by computers and the internet I would have a chance of getting back what I had lost. I knew nothing, not even how to make new folders on my desktop. Crucially though, I was willing to learn new skills and implement tried and tested methods taught to me by some of the internet's brightest entrepreneurs.

I was particularly interested in the whole YouTube channel phenomenon. People were making money through advert income and affiliate sales. I soon found myself watching hours of videos about anything to do with building a YouTube following.

Watching, one particular video, an advert popped up for a free online training course showing how to learn marketing skills in a modern digital marketplace. That seemed both current and relevant given the boom in online work, shopping and overall day-to-day engagement. It showed the skills needed to market any business or product be it my own or someone else's, physical or digital. This one advert has changed my life forever.

A Need for Change

Fast forward 24 months, and that video is the very reason I am now able to work from my laptop anywhere in the world.  Writing about divorce, and coaching men just like you to succeed in building their new lives.

Today I’m sitting in my camper overlooking the sea enjoying pizza and a beer at my favourite campsite in St David’s, south Wales. Soon I'm heading over to my holiday home in Croatia to catch some early-season sun.

Wherever I have an internet connection, I can work for the 2/3 hours a day I need to keep things on track earning a semi-passive income. Job done. All from watching a video on YouTube and believing in myself.

I don’t want to sound smug or tell you this to try to impress, it’s more as inspiration to show what’s possible in a short space of time. I’m no different from you, nor are the others before me.

The question isn’t so much of a technology gap as a reluctance for us to change our thinking to adopt technology, especially in terms of online marketing, digital communication, and e-commerce.

Old business rules don’t apply. All you now need is a willingness to learn something new. You have the opportunity to leave behind the 9-5 creating a new life far beyond your dreams.

Remember, experience, expertise, and resilience gained over the years can be invaluable assets. With the right mindset and proper planning, starting a new business in your 50s can lead to a fulfilling and prosperous journey into the next chapter of your life.

Indeed, by leveraging modern technology and other people's expertise I have achieved what would have traditionally taken decades. You can too. What do you have to lose?

9-5 until you retire in 20 years with not enough in the bank or 20 years living and building a life you enjoy and always dream of.
