We’ve all heard our grannies uttering the wise words “There’s plenty more fish in the sea” or maybe it is the old classic “hell has no fury like a woman scorned” but are they relevant in the modern world? After all my grannie has been gone some 45 years but they still trip off my tongue with great regularity.
Both of the above examples seemed to be particularly appropriate and used often over the last few years.
There are literally hundreds of them covering every subject life has to offer. Often relating to difficult experiences or times.
But what can we learn from them?
Do granny's sayings hold any water? Was my granny right?
As it turns out, yes they do and yes she was.
Placed at the heart of our upbringing, sayings are potent sources of knowledge, keys to hidden truths and wisdom.
When writing my book, Relaunching Dads, Mission Possible I came across many many principles for life improvement that could be summed up by sayings.
This is one of my favourites.
“The world does not respond to what you want, the world responds to who you become”.
After my divorce, I was forced to take a very hard look at my life, where it was, where it was heading and how I could change the direction towards a place that I was proud of rather than ashamed of.
My kids had lost faith in me, my ex-wife was happy that I wasn’t coping and my life was falling apart. I had wasted a large chunk of my divorce settlement on failed get-rich-quick schemes and I was no longer working enough hours to pay the bills. Disaster was looming. Bills weren’t getting paid and I was falling behind.
It all came to a head when I had my credit card declined in front of family and friends. I just burst into tears and wanted the ground to swallow me up.
This is when I knew it all had to change, and the next of my grannies' sayings came to mind.
“When you are in a hole stop digging”
I knew my life had to change. I needed to change the things I was doing on a day-to-day basis. The thoughts that were going through my head, the beliefs I held. They all needed to change.
I needed to learn a whole new set of behaviours and beliefs, a new way of life. Stop spending money I didn’t have, stop thinking things would miraculously get better somehow. That I would never have a life equal to the one I lost.
Just on this miraculous change that most of us somewhere in our heads hold as a strong belief, a reality, that we someday will make it. Wake up. Smell the coffee. It's bullshit and you are only lying to yourself, and worse still possibly your kids too.
What you have right now is a direct result of what you put in. What next, is more of the same unless you wake up.
Granny's sayings, once again rang loud again in my ears
“If it's not working change it” and so I set off on my journey to revolutionise my life.
I Drew a line in the sand, (that’s another one but not my grannies) I committed to change.
Change needs action and without it you have nothing. There is no change without action. The more action you take the more change you will achieve.
“All-out massive action gets all-out massive results”
“A rolling stone gathers no moss”
Don’t get fooled by
“Take it one step at a time” and ‘Rome wasn’t built in a day”
The quicker you take action the sooner you will find your new life. Without a doubt, you will hit a few bumps in the road and there will be some hurdles to overcome.
I now see problems, and bumps in the road as opportunities to learn and grow. A chance to gain another tool for my life toolbox.
As Thomas Edison on his obsessive journey to invent the light bulb said.
“I haven’t failed, I have just found 10,000 ways that it won’t work”.
The final rule for change is never Quit or as my Granny put it
“Winners never quit and quitters never win.”
There are plenty similar but all have the same meaning.
If you never quit you can't fail. Or put another way, success is the only inevitable outcome if you keep going.
Remember ‘change happens in an instant’. NOW is the Time for Your Relaunch.
Remind yourself of these 4 things daily.
- Change happens in an instant.
- You are responsible for you.
- Obstacles are gifts to learn.
- Never quit.
Despite unwrapping only a few of the sayings that fill our lives it’s quite clear they have both meaning and use in our modern world. Don’t ignore them, they have been around for centuries to guide us and illuminate your path on this journey.
One final thought.
I will say it again, it’s that important
‘The world does not respond to what you want, the world responds to who you become’.
